Safety Systems Management has installed advanced wireless emergency notification systems at The New Terminal One at JFK, enhancing worker safety during the construction phase.

Safety Systems Management (SSM) has recently installed 25 mobile communications towers at The New Terminal One at JFK, marking a significant advancement in construction site safety. These towers, operational during the construction phase, are strategically placed across Phase A of the project, covering a 1.8-million square foot area that includes new arrivals and departures halls and the first set of 14 new gates. The installation follows a collaboration with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, aiming to replace traditional air horn alerts with a more sophisticated wireless emergency notification system.
The system is designed to provide immediate audio/visual alerts and mass messaging capabilities, ensuring the safety and security of over 3,000 personnel involved in the project. It will be utilized during various safety-related events, including fires, medical emergencies, hazardous material spills, and even daily safety messages. The technology represents a leap forward in emergency communication, offering seamless interaction across the project site during critical situations.
At the core of the system is a base station located in the medical trailer, acting as the central command center. This setup allows the safety team to control an LED sign board for instant updates and use a dedicated emergency handset for broadcasting urgent messages. Each of the 25 communication towers is equipped with a pull pendant, enabling any worker to trigger an alert swiftly. The system's design ensures that safety personnel are immediately notified via text when an alert is activated, facilitating a quick response.
The New Terminal One at JFK is part of a broader $19-billion transformation of the airport, aiming to set a new standard for airport terminals worldwide. The installation of SSM's emergency notification systems underscores the project's commitment to worker safety, setting a precedent for large-scale construction projects.
