American Battery Materials Expands Focus to Magnesium Recovery in Utah’s Paradox Basin

American Battery Materials, Inc. (ABM) has announced a significant expansion of its mineral extraction operations in Utah’s Paradox Basin, now including magnesium alongside lithium. This strategic move underscores the increasing demand for magnesium in sectors such as defense, aerospace, and automotive, particularly for its lightweight properties essential in electric vehicles and other high-growth industries.

The Paradox Basin, already noted for its lithium deposits, is also rich in magnesium, presenting a dual opportunity for ABM. With mineral rights spanning 14,260 acres, the company plans to employ Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) techniques to co-extract both minerals efficiently. This method is praised for its minimal environmental footprint, as it largely avoids the ecological disruptions associated with traditional mining practices.

David E. Graber, CEO of ABM, emphasized the strategic importance of this expansion, linking it directly to the U.S. energy transition and the need for a robust domestic supply of critical materials. Magnesium, recently classified as critical by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Department of Defense, plays a pivotal role in advancing technologies and materials that are lighter, stronger, and more sustainable.

ABM’s approach not only aims to meet the rising demand for these essential minerals but also aligns with broader environmental goals. The company’s closed-loop extraction system is designed to return the majority of extracted brine to its source, significantly reducing the environmental impact and setting a new standard for sustainable mineral recovery.
