Better Youth Film Showcase to Amplify Marginalized Voices Through Powerful Storytelling

Better Youth, a social impact nonprofit, will showcase two groundbreaking short films that illuminate the experiences of marginalized communities during its upcoming Real to Reel Global Screening and Fundraiser Event on May 20, 2025.

The event will feature two distinctive works: 'Supershero: The Journey of Johna Rivers', a documentary, and 'Born Again', a narrative short film. These productions represent more than entertainment; they are powerful vehicles for social change and personal transformation.

'Supershero' chronicles the journey of Johna Rivers, a former foster youth from Watts, California, who has become a passionate advocate for girls of color. The documentary provides an intimate exploration of resilience, challenging stereotypes and offering a compelling narrative of personal empowerment.

The companion film, 'Born Again', delves into complex family dynamics, exploring themes of faith, identity, and acceptance through the story of Alexis and her transgender sibling Noelle. The narrative promises to challenge viewers' perspectives on familial relationships and unconditional love.

These films are part of Better Youth's broader mission to support foster and system-impacted youth aged 17-24. By providing no-cost training in creative fields like filmmaking, animation, and project management, the organization aims to create pathways for professional development and personal growth.

Founder and CEO Syd Stewart emphasizes the organization's core philosophy: transforming lives by validating young people's experiences and potential. Better Youth serves over 300 youth annually, offering mentorship, technical training, and holistic support designed to help participants transition from surviving to thriving.
