Broward Education Foundation Announces 2025 Sports Hall of Fame Inductees

The Broward Education Foundation announced the distinguished class of 2025 inductees for the Broward County Sports Hall of Fame, celebrating its 22nd year of recognizing exceptional athletes, coaches, and sports pioneers with local connections. The 2025 class includes six individuals and five championship teams from the late 1970s, all of whom have made significant contributions to Broward County's athletic heritage. The induction ceremony and awards banquet will take place on Thursday, October 16 at the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort, featuring former WSVN sports anchor and 2024 Hall of Fame inductee Steve Shapiro as presenter.

James A. Knapp, president and CEO of Broward Education Foundation, emphasized the significance of these honorees, stating that the 2025 class represents not only exceptional athletic talent but also demonstrates remarkable dedication and commitment to excellence that serves as an inspiration to students and the broader community. Among the individual inductees is Isaac Bruce, a Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver and Dillard High School graduate who played 16 NFL seasons, primarily with the St. Louis Rams. Bruce, known for his precise route-running and clutch performances, secured the Rams' Super Bowl XXXIV victory with a memorable 73-yard touchdown catch and retired among the league's all-time leaders in receiving categories. Beyond his on-field achievements, Bruce founded the Isaac Bruce Foundation, which promotes youth health, wellness, and education initiatives.

Professional rodeo athlete Isaac Diaz brings a different sporting background to the Hall of Fame, having earned over $1.5 million in career earnings as a saddle bronc rider with seven Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifications. The Davie native and three-time state high school champion also won a collegiate national title with Tarleton State University, demonstrating consistency and grit throughout his nearly two-decade career.

Dr. Daniel Kanell's induction recognizes his significant contributions to sports medicine after transitioning from his own athletic career. Following his medical training, Dr. Kanell served as team physician for multiple professional organizations including the Miami Dolphins, Miami Marlins, Fort Lauderdale Strikers, and Miami Fusion. His commitment to youth athletics included helping launch the Broward County School Board Sports Medicine Program and serving as president of the Broward County Orthopaedic Society.

Kathryn 'Kathy' Sallade receives recognition for her groundbreaking achievements as a Deaflympian and world-record setting swimmer. The Fort Lauderdale High School alumna became the fastest deaf backstroker globally, winning five gold medals and setting five world records across the 1969 and 1973 Deaflympics. Her legacy extends beyond competition through her coaching roles with the U.S. Deaflympics team and her inspirational journey as an athlete born with profound hearing loss.

Major League Baseball standout Scot Shields earned his place through a remarkable 10-year career as one of baseball's most reliable setup pitchers. The Fort Lauderdale High School graduate contributed significantly to the Anaheim Angels' 2002 World Series Championship and earned recognition as Sports Illustrated's Set-Up Man of the Decade for the 2000s. Shields still holds the Angels' all-time record for holds with 155.

Steve Strand's induction honors his more than four decades of contribution to St. Thomas Aquinas High School athletics as both player and coach. As head coach of the boys' basketball program from 1996 to 2019, Strand led the team to nine district championships, four Final Four appearances, and the school's first boys' basketball state title in 2001, compiling an impressive 397-186 career record while mentoring numerous players who advanced to college and professional careers.

The Cardinal Gibbons High School 1975-1979 State 4A Championship Women's Volleyball Teams complete the induction class, representing one of Florida's most dominant athletic dynasties. Under legendary head coach Louise A. Crocco, the Lady Chiefs captured five consecutive FHSAA 4A state championships during a period of rapid growth in women's athletics following Title IX implementation. Their precision serving, stifling defense, and intelligent offense not only filled gymnasiums with supporters but also inspired generations of young female athletes throughout South Florida.
