Florida Implements Stricter Penalties for Excessive Speeding

Florida has implemented a new law delivering harsher penalties for drivers who speed excessively, with the legislation taking effect on July 1, 2025. The law targets drivers traveling 50 mph or more over the posted speed limit, or those driving 100 mph or more regardless of the posted limit. First-time offenders now face up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine, while second offenders may receive up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. Drivers who violate the law three or more times within a five-year period will have their licenses suspended for up to one year, with third offenses carrying longer jail sentences and higher fines.

The legislation aims to improve safety on Florida highways and reduce fatalities and serious injuries resulting from high-speed collisions. The consequences for violating Florida's excessive speeding laws depend on traffic conditions when the violation occurred and may be determined at the officer's discretion. According to data from 2017 to 2023, law enforcement issued 123 citations to drivers going 50 mph or more over posted speed limits. The Florida Highway Patrol reported that more than 16,000 serious traffic accidents were caused by dangerous speeding during this period, resulting in over 170 fatalities and nearly 500 people suffering severe injuries.

Lieutenant Indiana Miranda of the Florida Highway Patrol noted that most speeding citations for drivers exceeding 100 mph tend to occur during overnight hours. The patrol has specialized midnight units that enforce traffic and speed regulations using laser technology. Miranda stated that these units regularly stop drivers traveling 50 mph over speed limits or driving at speeds reaching 120 mph. The new penalties represent Florida's commitment to addressing the serious safety concerns posed by excessive speeding on the state's roads and highways.
