Forbes' 2025 Next Billion-Dollar Startups list underscores the dominance of AI in the startup ecosystem, with 20 out of 25 featured U.S. companies focusing on artificial intelligence across various sectors.

The 2025 edition of Forbes' Next Billion-Dollar Startups list has been released, showcasing a significant trend towards artificial intelligence (AI) in the startup world. This year, 20 out of the 25 U.S.-based, venture-backed companies featured are AI-focused, demonstrating the technology's pervasive influence across industries such as healthcare, accounting, defense, and creative tooling. The list, a product of Forbes' decade-long collaboration with TrueBridge Capital Partners, has a notable track record, with over half of its past alumni achieving unicorn status. Among the 250 alumni, 140 have reached unicorn status, including notable names like DoorDash, Figma, and Anduril.
The selection process for the list involved a rigorous nomination and evaluation framework, targeting U.S. venture-backed companies valued under $1 billion. Forbes and TrueBridge combined journalistic reporting with quantitative analysis to identify startups with high growth potential. Criteria included founder quality, early traction, investor backing, and projected 2024 revenues, even for companies currently generating modest sales.
Highlighting the diversity of the list, AcuityMD, a Boston-based startup, stands out for its innovative use of de-identified data to help medical device manufacturers target the right physicians. Meanwhile, New York is represented by several AI-driven startups, including Agentio, a marketplace for brands to connect with influencers; Basis, which develops AI accounting software; Graphite, creator of an AI assistant for code reviews; and Rogo, building a chatbot to assist junior bankers with financial tasks.
The Los Angeles area contributes to the list with Apex, a small-satellite manufacturer with Department of Defense contracts, and Stan, a platform enabling online personalities to monetize their fame through integrated storefronts. Maryland's Forterra, specializing in robotics for defense applications, also makes the list, highlighting the geographical and sectoral diversity of Forbes' selections.
This year's list not only reflects the burgeoning role of AI in driving innovation and economic growth but also underscores the importance of venture backing in scaling startups to billion-dollar valuations. With a historical success rate of over 50% in producing unicorns, the Forbes Next Billion-Dollar Startups list remains a key indicator of emerging trends and future industry leaders.
