A groundbreaking user experience study shows drivers strongly desire integrated in-car payment services, with nearly all participants willing to pay more for seamless, easy-to-use payment functionality across driving-related services.

A comprehensive user experience report on in-car payment systems reveals significant consumer demand for integrated, streamlined payment services in vehicles, indicating a potential transformation in automotive digital experiences.
The 2025 In-Car Payments User Experience Report, conducted by Drive Research, explored driver attitudes toward in-car payment systems in the United States and Germany. The study found near-universal interest in seamless payment technologies, with 100% of US drivers and 93% of German motorists stating that an easy-to-use in-car payment system would enhance their driving experience.
Key findings demonstrate that drivers are not just interested in, but actively seeking integrated payment solutions. Approximately 97% of participants in both countries expressed willingness to use in-car payments for various vehicle-related transactions, including parking, electric vehicle charging, fueling, and toll payments.
The research highlighted critical factors for successful implementation, with user experience emerging as a pivotal consideration. Drivers indicated that complex registration processes could significantly discourage adoption, with 77% of German drivers and 70% of US participants stating that complicated enrollment would reduce their likelihood of using such services.
Brand perception was another crucial aspect uncovered by the study. An overwhelming 97% of US drivers reported that intelligent in-car payment integration would positively influence their opinion of a car manufacturer. Moreover, 87% suggested such functionality would increase their likelihood of purchasing from the same brand in the future.
The study compared two payment systems, revealing that an optimized, user-friendly interface could dramatically improve adoption rates. While only 20% of participants were likely to use the current industry standard system, over 90% expressed high interest in the updated, more streamlined version.
The research suggests that automotive manufacturers must prioritize creating intuitive, integrated payment experiences to remain competitive. As the automotive industry continues its digital transformation, particularly with the global shift toward electric vehicles, in-car payment systems are rapidly becoming an expected feature rather than a luxury.
Adam Calland, Global Marketing Director at Parkopedia, emphasized the growing importance of connected car services, noting that motorists increasingly value convenience and are willing to invest in technologies that simplify their driving experience.
