Massachusetts Maritime Academy and Buzzards Bay Coalition Enhance Education Through Maritime Experiences

The collaboration between Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) and the Buzzards Bay Coalition has brought a unique educational opportunity to New Bedford students, offering them hands-on learning experiences aboard the historic Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey. This initiative, now in its second year, has successfully engaged 650 students from grades 3 to 12 in a program that combines science, navigation, history, and Cape Verdean culture through interactive day trips.

During these educational outings, students participated in various activities led by a team of educators and the schooner’s crew. These included learning about the vessel's rich history, conducting water quality tests, and understanding maritime navigation. The program not only educates but also inspires students to explore the interconnectedness of science, culture, and environmental stewardship.

Mark Rasmussen, president of the Buzzards Bay Coalition, highlighted the excitement and enthusiasm of the students as they explored these subjects in an outdoor setting. Rear Admiral Francis X. McDonald of MMA emphasized the academy's commitment to experiential learning and community outreach, showcasing how such initiatives can inspire the next generation.

The SSV Ernestina-Morrissey serves as a vital educational platform for MMA, supporting sail and leadership training for cadets, as well as STEM programs for K-12 students. This partnership underscores the importance of preserving maritime heritage while fostering a love for learning and the environment among young students.
