A new study reveals that mid-tier data center operators are generating significant market influence through strategic communication, while larger companies and technology vendors struggle to effectively shape their industry narrative.

A comprehensive industry study by Hot Paper Lantern (HPL) has uncovered surprising insights into communication strategies within the data center sector, revealing that mid-sized operators are effectively leveraging media and social platforms to build their brand reputation and industry influence.
The research, titled "Who's Owning the Conversation?", analyzed over 35 companies across data center operators, cooling technology vendors, and network service providers. The findings challenge conventional assumptions about market visibility and communication effectiveness.
One of the most striking discoveries is that mid-tier data centers are generating substantially more media coverage and audience engagement compared to their larger counterparts. Despite having smaller budgets, these organizations are averaging seven times more coverage and fifteen times more engagement than companies with similar revenue profiles.
The study also highlighted critical communication gaps among industry segments. Cooling technology vendors, for instance, are notably underrepresented in industry conversations, with 90% of brands generating fewer than 500 media mentions across major platforms. This presents a significant opportunity for companies willing to proactively participate in emerging discussions around sustainability and energy efficiency.
Network service providers face similar challenges, with the top 40% of providers accounting for 95% of the industry's digital visibility. Most currently rely on generic product announcements rather than crafting compelling narratives that resonate with data center decision-makers.
Ed Moed, CEO of Hot Paper Lantern, emphasized the growing importance of strategic communication in an increasingly competitive market. "As artificial intelligence accelerates demand for advanced infrastructure, companies must establish themselves as thought leaders or risk being overlooked," Moed stated.
The research also revealed that increased media coverage does not automatically translate to a stronger reputation. Nearly 10% of social media conversations about the data center industry are negative, with over 80% of that negativity originating from just two highly active companies.
As the data center industry continues to evolve rapidly, this study underscores the critical role of strategic communication in shaping market perception and driving organizational growth. Companies that can effectively tell their story and engage meaningfully with stakeholders are likely to gain significant competitive advantages in this dynamic technological landscape.
