Minneapolis Public Housing Residents Gain Free High-Speed Internet Access Through Comcast Partnership

The Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA) has partnered with Comcast to revolutionize internet access for its residents by installing Xfinity's next-generation WiFi network in multiple public housing buildings. This strategic collaboration aims to bridge the digital divide and provide essential connectivity to low-income households.

Under the new initiative, residential units will be equipped with pre-installed WiFi, eliminating traditional barriers to internet access. Residents can activate their service instantly by calling or using the Xfinity App, enabling them to connect devices within minutes of moving into their new home.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey emphasized the broader significance of the partnership, stating that connecting public housing to the internet is about creating opportunities. By providing seamless digital access, the initiative seeks to empower residents with tools necessary for personal and professional growth.

MPHA Executive Director Abdi Warsame highlighted the critical nature of internet access in contemporary society. He noted that reliable, fast internet is essential for residents to access healthcare services, pursue educational opportunities, maintain social connections, and stay informed about community developments.

Comcast's regional senior vice president Kalyn Hove described the project as a transformative step toward ensuring digital equity. The partnership aims to provide residents with connectivity that can open doors to educational resources, job opportunities, and enhanced community engagement.

The WiFi network installation will occur in phases, with the first three buildings already completed. Comcast plans to expand WiFi-ready units across additional buildings by the end of 2026, gradually increasing digital access for MPHA residents.
