Northwest Battle Buddies marks its 300th service dog team graduation this fall, backed by a landmark study showing clinically significant PTSD symptom reduction in veterans through specially trained service dogs.

Northwest Battle Buddies will celebrate its 300th service dog team this fall, marking a significant milestone in providing specially trained service dogs to combat veterans with PTSD. Since 2012, the organization has been making a tremendous difference in veterans' lives by pairing them with service dogs that help overcome debilitating PTSD symptoms. The timing coincides with a recent study published in the Journal of Archives in Military Medicine (2025) proving these specially trained dogs provide clinically significant reduction in PTSD symptoms.
The landmark study represents one of the most rigorous evaluations to date examining the therapeutic role of psychiatric service dogs in managing PTSD. Sixty percent of the service dog teams used in the study were Northwest Battle Buddies pairings, making the findings a direct reflection of the program's impact. The research documented clinically significant reduction in PTSD symptoms across all symptom categories, reduction in co-occurring depression, gains in resilience, life satisfaction, and emotional well-being. Veterans also reported less isolation, more engagement, and overwhelmingly positive perceptions of healing.
Northwest Battle Buddies service dogs undergo five months of intensive training followed by five additional weeks with their veteran handler. Many service dogs are rescued from animal shelters, creating dual rescue missions. The dogs are trained in specific skills including waking their veteran from nightmares, interrupting anxiety attacks, redirecting flashbacks, alerting to adrenaline, providing social barriers in public, performing pressure therapy, and offering constant safety. These capabilities transform veterans' daily lives, enabling them to perform everyday tasks most people take for granted.
The organization's founder Shannon Walker describes witnessing complete transformations in veterans from the day they meet to five weeks later when they graduate with their service dog. Day-to-day life opens up for these veterans as the dogs help with grocery shopping, navigating crowded malls, and accompanying veterans through TSA and airport procedures. Veterans can attend family events, participate in social activities, and regain independence through what becomes a lifeline to freedom. For many veterans, a service dog isn't just a companion but a life-changing tool that helps not only the veteran but also their families through the trickle-down effect to live better lives after service.
Northwest Battle Buddies encourages community involvement through donations, volunteer opportunities, or fostering service dogs to support their mission. The organization is also a runner-up in the Defender Service Awards, which recognize nonprofits bringing positive impact to their communities. Should they win their category as an honoree, the $30,000 prize money will fund another service dog for another veteran. Public voting begins October 3rd through October 19th at https://defenderserviceawards.org. For more information about Northwest Battle Buddies, please visit https://northwestbattlebuddies.org.
