Pioneering Liver Cancer Researcher Receives Blue Faery Award for Advancing Immunotherapy Treatments

Dr. Mark Yarchoan of Johns Hopkins University has been awarded the Blue Faery Award for Excellence in Liver Cancer Research, recognizing his significant contributions to understanding and treating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide.

Yarchoan, an associate professor of medical oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, leads an NCI-funded laboratory dedicated to overcoming barriers in antitumor immunity. His research focuses on innovative immunotherapy approaches, including groundbreaking clinical trials of personalized neoantigen vaccines and neoadjuvant anti-PD1 immunotherapy specifically targeting liver cancers.

As a recognized clinical expert in hepatobiliary cancers, Yarchoan contributes to international guideline committees for the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The award, funded by AstraZeneca this year, was established by Blue Faery: The Adrienne Wilson Liver Cancer Association. Founded by Andrea Wilson Woods in memory of her sister Adrienne, who passed away from HCC at 15, the organization is committed to preventing, treating, and curing primary liver cancer through research, education, and advocacy.
