CAHEC New Markets is investing in a new facility called The Garden, which will significantly expand support for situationally homeless women and children in the Triangle region, offering comprehensive services beyond traditional shelter.

A new comprehensive support campus for homeless women and children is set to dramatically increase capacity and services in the Triangle region. The Raleigh Rescue Mission's innovative project, The Garden, will expand from current limited shelter capabilities to providing holistic support for up to 350 women and children annually.
The new facility will feature 101 rooms, including 60 for families and 41 for individuals, representing a substantial increase from the organization's current shelter capacity of 100 total beds. Beyond providing shelter, The Garden will offer a robust New Life Plan designed to support residents' long-term stability and independence.
The project's comprehensive approach includes critical support services such as job training, mental and physical health resources, and financial literacy education. Upon completing the program, participants are expected to secure living-wage employment, reliable transportation, and stable housing - addressing systemic challenges that contribute to homelessness.
Additional campus features include a Children's Learning Center with capacity for 150 children and the ability to serve 182,500 meals annually. The facility represents more than a traditional shelter, positioning itself as a transformative community development initiative.
CAHEC New Markets is leveraging New Markets Tax Credit allocations to fund this project, strategically investing in community-focused developments that promote economic advancement in underserved areas. The investment reflects a broader vision of creating integrated, mixed-income neighborhoods that prioritize inclusion and opportunity.
Future development phases will introduce transitional housing apartments and a gymnasium, further expanding the campus's comprehensive support model. Concurrent neighborhood development by Lennar, including market-rate single-family homes and a planned commercial hub, will complement the mission's transformative approach.
By addressing situational homelessness through a multifaceted strategy, The Garden represents a significant step toward breaking cycles of poverty and providing sustainable pathways to self-sufficiency for vulnerable families in the Triangle region.
