Reel Sisters Film Festival Celebrates 28th Anniversary with Focus on Healing, Love and Community Activism

The Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival & Lecture Series, marking its 28th anniversary, presents a comprehensive program focused on themes of healing, love, and community activism through the lens of women filmmakers. As the first Oscar-qualifying film festival devoted to women filmmakers, Reel Sisters maintains its commitment to amplifying diverse voices across all genres including comedy, science fiction, drama, and documentary. The festival's significance lies in its sustained dedication to creating platforms for women of color in an industry where their representation remains disproportionately low.

The four-week festival features several notable partnerships and events that expand its reach and impact. A special awards ceremony co-presented with the Brooklyn Academy of Music will honor documentary filmmaker Samantha Knowles, director of Harlem Ice, for her distinguished career. Knowles, whose recent work includes directing an episode of the acclaimed Netflix docuseries "Katrina: Come Hell and High Water," represents the caliber of talent the festival celebrates. The event will include a conversation led by Peabody award-winning filmmaker Yoruba Richen about the power of the female perspective in storytelling.

A new partnership with 651 Arts brings a full day of cinematic programming on October 25, 2025, while continued collaborations with BRIC Media and the Center for Fiction ensure the festival's presence across multiple Brooklyn venues. These institutional partnerships demonstrate the growing recognition of the importance of supporting women filmmakers and the stories they tell. Festival founder Carolyn A. Notable films include "You Are Not Alone," which examines the maternal mortality crisis affecting Black women in the Bronx, where Black mothers face a mortality rate nine times higher than their white counterparts. "Men of Courage" explores conversations among Black and Latino men about ending violence against women, while "Nannies of New York" provides firsthand accounts of Afro-Caribbean women working as domestic workers in New York City. These films demonstrate the festival's commitment to stories that not only entertain but also educate and advocate for social change.

Additional programming includes experimental works like "Plenum," which reconstructs the 1995 Black Nations/Queer Nations Conference, and historical explorations such as "Boil the Cabbage," which traces the complex history of the banjo through African Diasporic perspectives. The festival also supports emerging talent through events like the staged reading of scripts from the Summer Screenwriting Lab, co-presented with BRIC. This commitment to development at multiple career stages ensures the pipeline of women filmmakers continues to grow.
