Sickle Cell Awareness Family Day and 5K Walk to Address Healthcare Disparities

A comprehensive community event aimed at addressing the systemic challenges surrounding sickle cell disease (SCD) is set to take place on February 22, 2025, in Palmdale, California. The Sickle Cell Awareness Family Day and 5K Walk will provide an opportunity for education, support, and community action for those impacted by this genetic disorder.

The event, organized by Cayenne Wellness Center and Children's Foundation and My Footprints LA, will feature a 5K walk designed to promote solidarity and raise awareness about SCD. Participants will have the chance to engage in family-friendly activities, including face painting, a bounce house, food trucks, and live entertainment, while simultaneously supporting a critical health cause.

Sickle cell disease is a serious genetic condition primarily affecting African American and Hispanic-American populations. The disorder causes red blood cells to assume an abnormal, sickle-like shape, leading to potential severe health complications such as chronic pain, organ damage, and increased infection risks. Historically, research and healthcare resources for SCD have been significantly underfunded, a situation rooted in systemic inequities and structural racism.

A key component of the event is a blood drive conducted in partnership with the American Red Cross. Blood donors will have the opportunity to directly support individuals living with SCD and potentially receive a $20 Amazon gift card. The blood drive represents a tangible way for community members to make a meaningful difference in patients' lives.

Event participation is set at $35 per person, with all proceeds supporting efforts to improve resources, education, and care for individuals with SCD.
