Tennessee Schools Launch Innovative Portable Milk Dispenser Program

The Dairy Alliance, a nonprofit funded by dairy farm families in the Southeast, has partnered with Kingsport City School District in Sullivan County, Tennessee, to implement the Udderly Cold Portable Milk Dispenser, marking the first deployment of this technology in the nation. This compact system designed specifically for K-12 schools maintains milk at a consistent 35 degrees, significantly improving flavor quality and encouraging increased milk consumption among students. The innovative dispenser holds up to 25 gallons of bulk milk bags with a smart design that allows multiple bags to connect for triple capacity, capable of dispensing up to 400 perfectly portioned 8 oz servings before requiring product rotation.

The program received funding through an Endowment Grant from the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, with the official ribbon cutting ceremony taking place at John Sevier Middle School. During the event, local leaders emphasized the dual benefits for both students and dairy farmers. Charlie Hatcher, D.V.M., 10th-generation Tennessee dairy farmer and Commissioner of Agriculture, stated that milk dispensers in schools represent a significant advancement for both educational institutions and agricultural communities. The technology ensures milk remains fresh and high-quality while substantially reducing waste, allowing schools to serve optimal milk to students daily.

Farrah Newberry, CEO of The Dairy Alliance, highlighted the program's importance in supporting student health and sustainable nutrition practices. By delivering dairy milk directly to students through innovative methods, schools can more effectively incorporate nutritious dairy into daily meals and help students develop lifelong healthy habits. The initiative demonstrates how partnerships between schools, local leaders, and dairy farmers can create meaningful improvements in student wellness outcomes. The program's expansion beyond Kingsport is already underway, with Hardin County Schools in Savannah, TN implementing a similar Udderly Cold milk dispenser at Northside Elementary School.

Jennifer Walker, RD, Kingsport City School Nutrition Director, emphasized the critical nutritional importance of milk consumption, particularly for teenage girls during crucial bone development years. As the number one source of calcium in children's and teens' diets, milk provides essential nutrients that support growth and development. The placement of new milk dispensers in schools aims to encourage all students to enjoy milk with their reimbursable meals, ensuring every child has access to the health benefits milk provides. Dr. R. Andrew True, Assistant Superintendent – Administration for Kingsport City School District, expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort that brought this innovative milk delivery system to their schools, noting that such advancements are particularly exciting when they directly impact student health and wellbeing in positive, meaningful ways.

The broader implementation across Tennessee schools continues to maximize student access to and consumption of milk, representing a significant step forward in school nutrition programs. By bringing real dairy milk directly to students through advanced dispensing technology, The Dairy Alliance enhances access to healthy beverages, encourages balanced nutrition, and supports overall wellness within school communities.
