UGI Utilities is alerting customers about sophisticated scams where fraudsters create fake online ads and phone numbers to impersonate the utility company and charge for free services.

UGI Utilities, Inc. has reported another customer targeted by scammers attempting to collect payment for services that are provided free of charge. A customer scheduled for natural gas service line installation contacted a phone number found online that was not associated with UGI, where a scammer attempted to convince them they owed $1,350 for the installation and sent a payment request email. The customer recognized the fraud and contacted UGI's legitimate number to report the incident.
This warning follows a similar alert issued less than a week earlier regarding scammers creating sponsored online ads that appear when customers search for UGI's contact information. These ads, which contain fraudulent phone numbers, do not mention UGI but are designed to deceive customers into believing they are contacting the legitimate utility. The Federal Trade Commission continues to warn about this tactic being used across various platforms including online searches and social media.
Dan Adamo, UGI Vice President of Customer Relations, emphasized that customers should only use the official contact number: 800-276-2722. This number is prominently displayed on the company's official website and customer portal, though scammers continue developing methods to circumvent these safeguards.
UGI also advises customers to be cautious of door-to-door scammers posing as utility workers. Legitimate UGI employees carry photo identification, wear uniforms with the company logo, and drive marked vehicles. Customers should verify any suspicious visits by calling the official UGI number before allowing access to their homes.
