Walmart Expands Pharmacy Delivery to Include Refrigerated Medications Nationwide

Walmart has expanded its same-day pharmacy delivery service to include refrigerated and reconstituted medications across the United States, marking a significant advancement in healthcare accessibility. The service now covers more than 90% of prescription medications, including temperature-sensitive drugs like insulin, GLP-1s, and pediatric amoxicillin. This expansion makes Walmart the first retailer capable of delivering cold-chain prescriptions together with groceries and everyday essentials in a single online order.

The company has fulfilled over 4 million pharmacy delivery orders since piloting the service one year ago, with the fastest delivery recorded at just nine minutes. Kevin Host, senior vice president of Pharmacy at Walmart, stated that this enhancement results from listening to customers and creating seamless experiences that prioritize community needs. Refrigerated medications represent over 30% of Walmart Pharmacy sales, making this delivery option particularly valuable for individuals with limited time, mobility issues, or preferences for home-based shopping.

Customers receive notifications through their pharmacy accounts once prescriptions are filled and can choose from Same-Day Scheduled, On-Demand, or Express delivery options. Insurance is applied automatically during the process, mirroring the in-store experience. To ensure medication safety and quality, Walmart employs insulated packaging that maintains regulated temperatures and uses light-blocking materials to protect sensitive prescriptions from UV exposure. All deliveries require in-person receipt with electronic signatures for verification.

This service expansion aligns with Walmart's long-standing commitment to affordable healthcare, including its $4 generic prescription program, which remains eligible for delivery. With more than 15,000 pharmacists nationwide, the company provides not only medications but also immunizations, health screenings, and trusted counsel. Walmart+ members receive free pharmacy delivery as a benefit, while non-members pay fees based on delivery preferences. By integrating digital innovation with physical scale, Walmart continues to redefine omnichannel retail, offering customers comprehensive access to essentials without leaving home.
