Marshall Goldsmith Shows How to Find Motivation Again in Life
“Motivation cannot be divorced from actually doing the specific tasks to achieve goals. Motivation can be confused with desire. Motivation is the reason we continue acting that way.”

In a blog post related to motivation, adapted from his new book The Earned Life, the renowned leadership coach Marshall Goldsmith explores how motivation is a force in earning a fulfilled life.

Goldsmith writes: “Motivation cannot be divorced from actually doing the specific tasks to achieve goals. Motivation can be confused with desire. Being motivated is that heightened emotional state coupled with a supercharged impulse to do each of the specific tasks required to achieve that goal. The true test of our motivation is grounded in evidence. Motivation is a strategy, not a tactic. Motive is the reason we act in a certain way. Motivation is the reason we continue acting that way. In identifying your motivation, be sure to grade it on its long-term sustainability—and be realistic about your ability to sustain in the face of risk, insecurity, rejection, and difficulty.”

The war in Ukraine has inspired people to consider what motivates them in their own lives, compared to the dire straits that so many Ukrainians are in. For many other people, motivation is hard to come by.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. These are particularly timely themes today.

With Goldsmith’s book as a guide, readers can close the gap between what they plan to achieve and what they actually get done—even in a world full of inescapable unfairness and curveballs—and live an earned life that is fulfilling in the long run.
