“Most of us live blithely on, without a thought about the transitory nature of our lives, our impressions, our relationships, our happiness. We are often winded by the pace of change.”

Goldsmith writes, “Most of us live blithely on, without a thought about the transitory nature of our lives, our impressions, our relationships, our happiness. But when we were forced to stay home, to isolate, to look out for ourselves and our loved ones in ways we hadn’t confronted before, we were also forced to examine our priorities. But slow is relative. We may think we’ve slowed down, but we’re probably only judging ourselves by our experiences, by what others do, by our expectations or some other mind trick. We are often winded by the pace of change.”

U.S. intelligence has played a significant role in making possible two of Ukraine’s most remarkable feats in a war with rapid changes: the killing of a large number of Russian generals, and the sinking of Moscow’s Black Sea flagship, the Moskva. There has been an escalation of U.S. and allied arms shipments to Ukraine, which have included artillery, radar, and armored vehicles, as well as training on how to use them. As the war lingers on, certain aspects, such as technology from the West, is speeding up.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. These are particularly timely themes today.

With Goldsmith’s book as a guide, readers can close the gap between what they plan to achieve and what they actually get done—even in a world full of inescapable unfairness and curveballs—and live an earned life that is fulfilling in the long run.
