“If you’re not focusing on your priorities in life, you won’t be thinking about your runway. Many people don’t change their lives because they think they’ve run out of runway.”

In a blog post related to transitions in life, adapted from his new book The Earned Life, the renowned leadership coach Marshall Goldsmith talks about when to pivot in life, and how to land safely. He writes: “If you’re not focusing on your priorities in life, you won’t be thinking about your runway. You are likely to be gliding along until you have to land. It’s often not your choice. You may not know what lights you up, or you haven’t given yourself the space in life to discover it. Many people don’t change their lives because they think they’ve run out of runway.”

Many people who are in dire situations and seek refuge elsewhere are pivoting to stay alive. With the war in Ukraine and many other humanitarian crises around the world, the number of refugees fleeing their countries is expected to reach 30 million globally this year in the largest refugee crisis since World War II. An article in Forbes has suggested that it’s time for business leaders to re-frame the issue and view refugees as potential talent and business builders. Ukrainian refugees, for example, are highly educated and skilled, and could bolster the tech businesses in countries that welcomed them.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. These are particularly timely themes today.

With Goldsmith’s book as a guide, readers can close the gap between what they plan to achieve and what they actually get done—even in a world full of inescapable unfairness and curveballs—and live an earned life that is fulfilling in the long run.
