In many ways, deciding who we want to become is like adopting an ideology or credo for our life, a single premise that we rely on to interpret our past and determine our present and future.

In a blog post related to shaping our personal future, adapted from his new book The Earned Life, the renowned leadership expert and bestselling author Marshall Goldsmith talks about how we can shape our future to create a fulfilling life.

Goldsmith writes, “In many ways, deciding who we want to become is like adopting an ideology or credo for our life, a single premise that we rely on to interpret our past and determine our present and future.”

Ukrainian forces recently pushed Russian troops north and east of Kharkiv back close to the Russian border amid heavy fighting. This is a far cry from what many observers believed would happen on February 24, the day that Russia invaded Ukraine. Then, the world anticipated that Russian forces would quickly overwhelm the nation, and that Ukrainian forces would succumb to the supposed Russian military might. This has not happened. Ukrainians have long prepared for this sort of action by Russia, especially following that country’s aggression in 2014. They have adopted what can be considered a credo of resistance in the face of unwanted aggression. They have used their recent past to build for the future.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. These are particularly timely themes today.

With Goldsmith’s book as a guide, readers can close the gap between what they plan to achieve and what they actually get done—even in a world full of inescapable unfairness and curveballs—and live an earned life that is fulfilling in the long run.
