A Generalist Can Have a Special Genius, Too

In a blog Post related to one’s personal gifts, adapted from his new book The Earned Life, the renowned leadership expert and bestselling author Marshall Goldsmith talks about how someone with a particular gift can use that gift for a variety of goals.

“When you develop a highly specialized skill and practice it like a dedicated craftsman, you can call the shots.”

Goldsmith writes, “When you develop a highly specialized skill and practice it like a dedicated craftsman, you can call the shots. You’re more unique and therefore in greater demand. You’re more engaged, and blessed with greater purpose.”

A growing nonprofit is making the world cleaner, one little-used hotel bar of soap at a time. Clean the World focuses on repurposing bar soap. Participating companies can enroll in the program online and receive boxes to collect discarded products at their properties. Full boxes of used soap are shipped to the nonprofit’s warehouses. It distributes the soap — which is cleaned and repurposed by being made into bars that can be used by others — to charities and organizations that serve people in need. This is a specialized company that serves many people.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. These are particularly timely themes today.

With Goldsmith’s book as a guide, readers can close the gap between what they plan to achieve and what they actually get done—even in a world full of inescapable unfairness and curveballs—and live an earned life that is fulfilling in the long run.
