In a blog post related to the way we create our future, adapted from his new book The Earned Life, the renowned leadership expert and bestselling author Marshall Goldsmith talks about how aspiration moves us to create more fulfilling lives.

“Three variables govern the progress we make toward living a life we seek. These are Action, Ambition, and Aspiration."

Goldsmith writes, “There are three variables that govern the progress we make toward living a life we seek. These are Action, Ambition, and Aspiration. Action is what we’re doing now. Ambition is what we want to achieve. Aspiration is who we want to become. Aspiration is the rational process by which we work to care about something new.”

Despite the ravages of war, life continues in Ukraine. Recently life returned to Kharkiv, in eastern Ukraine, as people began to shop at markets in a northern suburb for hardware supplies and flowers. The Ukrainian people’s incredible resistance in the face of the invasion is one of the most remarkable stories to come from this unprecedented war. They aspire to return to the lives they had, despite the overwhelming destruction around them caused by an invading army.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. These are particularly timely themes today.

With Goldsmith’s book as a guide, readers can close the gap between what they plan to achieve and what they actually get done—even in a world full of inescapable unfairness and curveballs—and live an earned life that is fulfilling in the long run.
