“Community lies at the heart of our fulfillment. You need a community to nurture you.”

In a blog post concerning community, adapted from his new book The Earned Life, the renowned leadership expert and bestselling author Marshall Goldsmith talks about how community makes life more meaningful and even, in many cases, possible.

Goldsmith writes, “Whatever your discipline, whatever your inclination in career, whatever steps you’re taking toward creating an earned life, community lies at the heart of our fulfillment. What life is earned if you are alone? Community comprises all the people in your life. Even if you are compliant in what you do, accountable to yourself and others, follow up to ensure you’re doing what you set out to do and measure the results, you still need a community to nurture you.”

Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen recently urged the European community to increase spending to support Ukraine, as Russia’s attacks on the country’s critical infrastructure continued. Europe and the U.S. have worked together to enact sanctions against Russia in the nearly three months since Russian President Vladimir V. Putin ordered an invasion. But they have been less aligned on the need to help prop up Ukraine’s economy and to assist with its rebuilding once the war ends. The U.S. Congress has already approved a $13.6 billion emergency spending package for Ukraine and is expected to approve another $40 billion worth of aid. While the European Union and international financial institutions have also been making large aid contributions, Ms. Yellen said that more must be done. The world community needs to work together to support Ukraine.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. These are particularly timely themes today.

With Goldsmith’s book as a guide, readers can close the gap between what they plan to achieve and what they actually get done—even in a world full of inescapable unfairness and curveballs—and live an earned life that is fulfilling in the long run.
