In a blog post related to planning one’s future, adapted from his new book The Earned Life, the renowned leadership expert and bestselling author Marshall Goldsmith talks about a gathering he instituted, where people in business, or recently retired from top positions in business, can discuss their future plans.
“‘What’s Next?’ weekends provided people with a venue to talk with people they respected, and reveal that all of us have similar problems.”
Goldsmith writes that his “‘What’s Next?’ weekends provided people with a venue to talk with people they respected, and where they could talk about anything and everything. They could reveal that all of us have similar problems. And, most important, in the right environment, such as these weekends with a small group session featuring a gathering of people of varied backgrounds but similar situations, they are willing to open up and share their problems, their insights, ask questions, and hear advice from people like them.”
Figuring out next steps is always difficult, especially for people who’ve had long experience and success. Bloomberg Media introduced a venture called Bloomberg UK, which will compete directly with The Financial Times and The Sunday Times, long-running British business journals. Bloomberg is going after a British audience in a big way after being in the British market for 30 years. Bloomberg UK will include a website, a weekly Bloomberg Quicktake video series profiling British newsmakers, a podcast about the City of London, and a summit this year on the future of British business.
In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. These are particularly timely themes today.
With Goldsmith’s book as a guide, readers can close the gap between what they plan to achieve and what they actually get done—even in a world full of inescapable unfairness and curveballs—and live an earned life that is fulfilling in the long run.
