In a blog post related to the importance of measuring progress, adapted from his new book The Earned Life, the renowned leadership expert and bestselling author Marshall Goldsmith talks about how measurements give us signs when we need to continue improving.

Goldsmith writes, “Measurement is the truest indicator of our priorities—because what we measure drives out what we don’t. If financial security is your top priority, you check your net worth every day. If you’re serious about losing weight, you step on a scale each morning. If you have stomach issues, you measure the composition of your gut biome. Not every measurement that matters to us has to be a hard, objective number. Soft, subjective numbers can be just as meaningful. Encouragement and measurement are part of an earned life.”

By any measure, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has altered the world’s priorities, especially in terms of the energy and economic sectors. The European Union just released a plan to end the region’s dependence on Russian energy within five years, in response to the invasion of Ukraine. Russia supplies about 40% of the EU’s gas, about 25% of its oil, and half of its coal. It's an ambitious plan, but its proponents feel that this plan to reduce its dependence on Russia for its energy is achievable, as well as necessary.
